The market is always there - there is always a hungry mouth to feed or is willing to pay for a meal. Still running a restaurant is hard work as well as lots of hours. It seems now that it is even tougher and harder as restaurateurs are feeling the pinch in their pocketbooks as a slowing economy and rising costs have bit in. Food prices for ingredients are way up - that is no secret to anyone who has recently shopped at any supermarket. Yet many restaurant customers resist price increases regarding any price hikes as unwarranted and unjustified. I paid this amount last year, it should not be any different or more. The other option is to reduce portions or levels or service. However in the long run or even the shorter run this could be downright disastrous for any restaurant. Once a reputation in the food service, or basically any business, it is next to impossible to restore.

The option for others is to open a franchise. By opening a franchise you are basically buying a reputation as well as proven system for running the shop , training and hiring staff. It can be argued that it better to have someone work out the bugs - do the homework and be able to purchase supplies in bulk. Yet you are stuck with some else’s ideas of how to run your own business and with what. More chance or surviving but will you ever prosper or in essence bought yourself a job with your hard earned capital.

What is an apprenticeship ? Apprenticeship is a form of post secondary education , so to speak , like university or college - but in the real world. It can even be said that in some areas of the world - like Britain or the U.K. , training that would be in advanced university training is there done to a great degree , under the specific eyes of a trained practitioner in this case another M.D. or in the U.K. called a M.B. .

The advantage is that while you have to save ahead of time to go to university or college and as well work along the way - in an apprenticeship program you are paid as well for the work that you are doing - which softens the blow to a great degree.

In carefully conducted surveys and reports on the attitudes of both working men and women towards women drinking Bill Piker reported , along with Shaun Stevens the most liberal attitude was that women should only drink white wine at most. A number in the range of thirty five ( 35 %) reported that it was their feeling and feelings that women should “not” or “never “ drink. But women who do not drink but make it more than obvious that they object to other people drinking drew similar responses and negative reactions.

There are all sorts of pitfalls a women should avoid at all costs in business and at the “office”

Here are some general guidelines-

- first do not have your office painted in any color or colour scheme but a standard run of the mill office color. Resist the temptation to be “cute” or trendy. Conservative and staid is the best choice overall to present “stability” or the image of tried and true. Blue and beige are the most basic and widely used.

- do not have a flower on your desk. It is the badge of a secretary

- It is a good idea to keep an extra set of clothes in your office. However keep them out of site. It is as if you are broadcasting that you may spill something on yourself at any moment. Not unlike an over controlling poor manager of a business who not only had closed circuit tv camera monitors proudly displayed in the front of his employment agency , webcams pointed at visitors with signs demanding “announce yourself” and an exercise bicycle in full view in his office area - as if he had to offload great stress at each moment and was on the verge of a final nervous collapse. What a relief that would of been to his workers from all the control efforts.

- Lastly although men display pictures of their wives , their dogs and even their hunting buddies it is not a wise idea for a women to have her husband’s pictures on her desk. However pictures of kids , grand kids and even pets seem to get a good response.

In terms of carry on luggage for a women looking for employment there is only one type of luggage any women in America, Canada or Mexico should carry. It is a matched set of canvas luggage with belting leather strapping.

If a women carries belted leather luggage , which is the standard luggage of the male executive she comes on as an imitation male. Sort of like a woman’s male suit of clothes. A poor imitation at best. Be yourself in action. Not a flower copy.

However if a women carries pink, yellow or other gaily colored bags that announce to the world and business world at that that she is at best “frilly”, she also will not get the best treatment. Those tags tell bellboys that she is a non-tipping secretary on “vacation”.

The luggage that seems to test best overall appears to be good canvas with belted leather strapping. This choice gets salutes from male executives and service from bellboys and bellhops. Louis Vuitton luggage tests better than other brands and types. Close imitations without designer initials tested well as well. As well they are significantly lower priced - very reasonably priced at that.

One useful tip is to use a business card holder that functions as well as a luggage tag. Often hotels will hand them out to regular business travels as a spiff. These cards and tags indentify you as such as a “business traveller”, a regular who should be afforded better levels of service.

It can be said that your resume is “you” or your final print or cut. Just as “first impressions” are everything so is the impressions that your resume portrays and delivers.

Your resume must be genuine. It must be “you in the flesh” so that when you follow up on your job search and contacts both your resume and yourself are in congruity and continuity. How else could it be otherwise.

If your resume is dry and lackluster your initial impressions on any H.R. people that you are most dry and lackluster and too low key for them unless the job is for a funeral director. Style can be said to be of great importance as well. Next style has to fit format. Just as you will have to package yourself in the costume of the job territory, your resume and applications have to be packaged more than appropriately.

It can be said that no stock format will totally fit your story. Resume formats are like fingerprints and eyes. No two living people have the same. Format lengths range from one-page teasers to magazine length treatises. However yet again this may be all lost on some low intelligence types who somehow have risen in their position and may be intimidated by such standard words and phrases as the word “arbitrary” . Again it all comes down to hard work and research as well as attention to detail and details.

The truth can be said that at best, many people including the professional h.r. people that you will be call on and be in contact with that many of them will read resumes like they read newspapers or a computer screen. A quick initial glance at the first page or screen . Then a few other paragraphs here and there. Seldom if ever turning the page or reading down to the bottom of the computer screen. That is why targeting your job resumes and applications to both the job application and the personalities and their preferences are so important.

It should be more than noted and appreciated that different H.R. directors have different preferences when it comes to job resumes and applications. It is up to the individual job seeker to “do their research and homework”. If you go fishing you may like strawberry cheesecake but what matters is what “bait “ the fish like.

As an example one personnel director may prefer a freshly typed or printed resume that is specifically orientated and the opening that the firm is trying to fill. It shows thoroughness and attention to detail in the candidates that they are seeking for the posted job.

Other personnel directors may prefer and actually gives preference to standard two page formats if they are copied on high quality rag content paper stock and do look gray are as if they are mass produced by a laser printer by the hundreds.

Yet you may find that a corporate head hunter votes highly for a standard second page that lists details and a customized first page that more than clearly states how your qualifications and objectives specifically relate to the firm’s or their client firm’s needs .

It all comes down to needs and preferences of the H.R. director , their firm or corporation or those of their clients.

Their is no one “right” or “correct” answer. It all comes down to hard work of research , attention to detail and getting down in the trenches.

Using your notes and records you can mock up a rough draft of a letter to the interviewer.

Before the details an pictures fade take the time to do a rough draft of that letter to the interviewer /s .

In your letter:

1) thank the interviewer or interviewers for the time and attention that he or she gave you.

2) Restate the three most positive things about you that were noted or became apparent in the interview process

3) Correct the one or at most two of the negative points, that came up in the interviewing process . Turn these into positive points. The banks do it in customer service issues - why not you ?

As an example if you spent time in prison then note that you spent the time well be reading every John Grisham book available in the library. As well emphasize the practical and moral experiences that were afforded there.

Close your letter with one new item about your work or your experience / experiences. It should well be something that you either forgot at the time or did not have the time during the limited time span of the interview process to eludicate.

Lastly sign off with one sentence that acknowledges one of the basic following conditions of life

1) that the job offer you got , which you promised that you would respond to by the time you had promised that you would - i.e. keep any promises made or intended

2) No job offer now , but your expectation of being considered for another position in future

3) Notification of a job offer by the date - they agreed to contact you
