Being unemployed puts you at tremendous disadvantage when you are looking for a job. It is often said that you are valuable for other employers to “steal” if you currently have a job. Perhaps so . However there are advantages to not being in the work force. First of all it is understood that in today’s business climate employees are downsized often - through no fault of their own and are now “unemployed”.. Be glad it isn’t you. The old joke is what is difference between a economic slowdown and a depression. A recession is where your neighbor loses his job. A depression occurs when you lose your job , employment and income. In addition many people are on “term” or ” contract” basis. Many companies have come to the realization that if they keep employees on a less than 40 hours a week - as a part time , or as a temporary employee according to government labor laws they do not have to pay employee benefits. The cost of employee benefits has become a major portion of the overall cost of an employee. The companies keep these empoyees part time but pay the employees more per an hour salary. Hence the employees will as it were stick around and not find that they do not have enough income so that they have to find another new job, The company pays more per hour, but less overall for the cost of labor at the plant. The worker gets a salary they can live on with less hours. Everyone so to say is happy. Downsizing mergers, consolidations ,acquisitions , part time employees looking for more hours, temporary workers in between jobs and professionals ( men as well as women) taking time off to raise the children. It all comes out in the mix.

Best to include as much contact information as possible on your resume and in your cover letter . That is, give your mailing address, e-mail 10, residence phone number (also office phone number if not objectionable to your present employer) and mobile number to enable an employer to reach you at any point of the day.

An employer is not at all interested in which school you studied. Hence avoid giving the details of your school studies in the resume. Also avoid giving details such as date of birth, religion, your height, weight, and your present emoluments, reasons for leaving the previous employment or present one or your hobbies for that matter. These things are not needed by the prospective employer. A great many people and job seekers have won job offers by cleverly anticipating an organization or business firms’s needs. Bankruptcies , articles featuring the problems and misgivings of companies ,( such as Manitoba Jazz) , or whole industries , can indicate competitive stuggles - major players and upcoming players in a field m and are usually indicative of firms and whole employment fields and industries that can and do welcome fresh , progressive and experienced talent and resources.

The trade shows and conventions can be a very efficient and effective medium for developing contacts for future and present employment and job advancement. In one location you usually have dozens of people and contacts assembled , all of whom are associated with an industry of interest to you , and of of whom are there because they want to talk to people. In these situations , people at all levels are usually present. If you are not able to make a contact at the management level , you can at least make a friend or contact for employment down the line. This person cam then serve as your starting point for making higher contacts up along the food chain of this firm or organization. You should keep a record of the names of individuals you meet - especially industry “leaders” and “movers and shakers”. The best impressions are left by individuals who seem to have the ability to remember names. It leaves a great lasting personal impression. If you can achieve even a small degree of prominence , this could bring you leads and make it much easier to develop and expanding existing contacts in the field of your choice. If you have any writing talent, you might try your hand at authoring some articles and submit them to trade or industry press. Anything that you can do to gain increased visibility will result in easier initiation of new contacts. Talking an active role in community affairs , politics and service clubs, along with speaking at seminars and trade associations will serve as as a means of accomplishing the same end. However , the best time to do this is before you need to aggressively begin a job campaign. Aside from keeping in touch with your existing associates , you can generally expand your potential leads by making an effort toward active participation in the social side of business. Do everything from dining in restaurants patronized by those in your field of choice. Attend seminars , parties , trade associations and supplier meetings. If you have never been an extrovert , the time to start is when you know that you are going to need a new job. Also , at times you should keep detailed , proper records of the names of individuals that you meet as well as those who come across your paths. You may have well encountered it : one of the best ways to impress is to be able to quickly recall someone’s name from a single brief meeting. Today it is more than common for people to have a second job on a part-time basis. As an example an ambitous M.B.A in his late 20’s , took a job as a limousine driver two evenings each week. His assignments involved meeting executives at the local international airport and driving them either to evening dinner meetings or to their homes. By the eighth week of this part time job , this person had a list of thirteen highly placed executives that he could call .
